I don’t know about you, but I always enjoy getting a glimpse of what goes on behind the scenes for a pattern, magazine or book. So, I thought, I would post a few pictures of my own from my photo shoot for my upcoming “Riverwalk” sock pattern, sponsored by Dyeabolical Yarns, located in St. Louis, Missouri.
The colors of Rachel’s yarns are just amazing, and you can even choose your yarn base and have it dyed to order at no extra cost! I’ve come across her website in one of my many web surfing sessions to find the right yarn for a pattern idea and just fell in love with her new semi-solid colorways. Don’t you think the colorway “Riverwalk” (wasn’t I original for the pattern name?) on the Tenacious sock yarn base (4-ply fingering; 75% superwash merino, 15% nylon, 10% tencel; 380 yd [348 m]/3.5 oz [100 g]) fits the design just perfectly?
Small mock cables, with an eyelet in the center, on a (k2, p2) ribbing base, are arranged in stacked chevrons mimicking the rushing waters of rivers and creeks. So it was only natural to seek out some water for the photo shoot.
Now, if I mention the word “water” in our house and on a hot day during the long summer school break, the whole family will “volunteer” to come along and assist me in a heart beat. Yeah, right, assist me… there is just way too much interesting stuff to explore in and around a creek than to take pictures of a pair of socks…
Luckily I held my tongue and decided to go with the flow (pun intended) and let them all just enjoy the setting for a while. Who can complain about hanging out alongside some refreshingly cool rushing water…
… and watching many tubers lazily float down stream on a hot summer day? Doesn’t that look like fun?
Eventually the first wave of their curiosity was satisfied and we were able to get to work without having to worry about one or both of the boys being swept passed us because they’ve ventured too far into the stream. Both of them are what I call “water rats” (i.e. they LOVE the water and are very good swimmers) but you should never underestimate the power of water. This was the same creek after all that flooded Boulder during last year’s national news making flooding event…

Lots of posing and balancing with the socks on the rocks happened, trying to stay dry…
…until I had the brilliant idea (or a bit of a slow “duh” moment) to dip my toes in the water and get the socks wet! It’s a bit unusual but I think a perfect match to the overall theme of the design. What do you think? Was it worth to think a bit out of the box?
In the end, I had a pair of wet socks, a family of happy campers, with nobody falling into the creek which was a major feat in itself already, and lots of pictures to sift through for the soon to be released pattern.
I would say, two thumbs up for a successful photo shoot and family outing. I hope you’ve enjoyed the little glimpse behind the scenes. You can find a few more pictures in my Flickr album.
Keep an eye out here and on Ravelry for the release of the “Riverwalk” pattern.
